Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. He was also a skilled cartoonist and his <em>Uncle Joe’s Nonsense</em> (1934) contains a collection of humorous stories illustrated with clever pen sketches. And then there is his legacy, which constitutes today annual memorial lectures associated with the Ceramic Society in England and the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, a Mellor Professorship at the University of Otago, and a Mellor street and park in the suburb of Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin. His personal archives, ceramics and books are found at Special Collections, University of Otago, the Otago Museum, and the Heritage Collection, Dunedin Public Library.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This blue Leeds Fireclay Company bowl was owned by Mellor and gifted to the Otago Museum by his wife, Emma, in 1945. The possession of it is understandable given Mellor’s interest in refractory materials in furnaces and kilns. Fireclay (hydrous silicates of aluminium; Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O) was discovered in a coal mine by William Wilcox and John Lassey in 1859. It can withstand very high temperatures.

B. H. Robinson MSc (NZ) PhD (Cant) FNZIC FRSNZ. Professor Brian Robinson’s areas of research covered core areas of inorganic and organometallic chemistry involving synthetic, mechanistic and structural studies. These have ranged from the design of non-linear optical materials incorporating metal clusters to investigations of platinum chemistry related to drug synthesis. He has conducted pioneering work in academic science administration and quality advancement, public safety of chemicals, and political education on hazardous materials. He also transformed academic chemistry into commercially realistic ventures.

While at University, Mellor studied Physics, Chemistry, Pure and Applied Mathematics, Biology, Zoology, Logic, Psychology, Ethics and Latin. He had to take his final exams twice as the boat taking his papers back to England sank off Cape Horn in South America. This certificate shows that in 1897 he was awarded his BSc. Mellor also won the senior scholarship in Chemistry. He received first class honours for his MSc thesis on the cyanide process, and in 1899 won the coveted 1851 Exhibition Science Scholarship, which gave him £150 per year for two years. This allowed him undertake a PhD at Owens College, Manchester.

After Mellor’s death on 24 May 1938, tributes began flowing in. The American Ceramic Society supplied their own tribute in their Bulletin, June 1938. They offered readers an overview of Mellor’s life, and importantly a listing of the 116 papers he wrote. As can be seen, many are of a technical nature, dealing with glazes and chemical processes within the field of ceramics. Anecdotes abounded in the obituaries. One recorded the time when a British Pottery Manufacturers’ Federation official asked Mellor to attend a meeting to solve a technical problem that had arisen. Mellor’s reply was: ‘All right, as soon as I have read ‘Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred’. The writer ended his article: this is ‘why he is called Peter Pan. He positively refuses to grow up.’

The Griffin publishing dynasty began life in 1795 in Glasgow as booksellers. They published their first book in 1820 and Charles Griffin and Co. Ltd was established in London in 1852. In 1920 the firm put out <em>Griffin’s Centenary Volume, </em>which states that ‘well over 90 per cent. of the firm’s publications are technical and scientific text-books, manuals and monographs’. Charles Rae Griffin became a director in the company when his father, also Charles, died in 1907. Griffin amicably corresponded with Mellor in the late 1930s regarding the republication of his <em>Treatise on Quantitative Inorganic Analysis</em>. Here Griffin mentions his upcoming trip to South Africa to visit his ‘dear old mother’.

In 1901, Mellor’s teacher, Harold B. Dixon (1852-1930) encouraged him to write a book on mathematics as it applied to chemistry. Mellor’s <em>Higher Mathematics for Students of Chemistry and Physics</em> was published by Longmans, Green and Co., in 1902, the year he completed his doctorate. This work represented the beginning of a long relationship with the firm. In August 1902, Mellor received a letter from Charles Longman (1852-1934), who informed him that the suggestion of a Physical Chemistry series was now a reality, and that Professor Sir William Ramsay (1852–1916) was to be editor. Longman also informed Mellor that Ramsay ‘thinks so well of your book’, which was certainly Mellor’s <em>Higher Mathematics</em>.

Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. Another part of Mellor’s legacy was royalties gained through his publications. As late as September 1947, Arthur Downer, on behalf of publishers Charles Griffin & Co., wrote to Emma informing her of certain payment discrepancies over her husband’s<em> A Treatise on Quantitative Inorganic Analysis</em> (1912). In a statement that would please any author, she was told that ‘the matter has now been corrected in our books and from now onwards you will be paid at the higher rate.’

In 1904 Longmans, Green & Co., published Mellor’s <em>Chemical Statics and Dynamics</em>, which was part of Ramsay’s Physical Chemistry series. Mellor hoped that this ‘Introduction’ (as he termed the book) ‘will enable the neophyte, without mathematical knowledge, to see his way through the ideas involved; and he can take the mathematical operations on trust just as he would if I were to state that 81 is the cube root of 531441.’ Sir William Ramsay was a Scottish chemist who discovered the noble gases (Helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon) and received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904. His ground-breaking work led to the development of a new section of the periodic table.

This 18th century porcelain plate was produced in Jingdezhen in the Jiangxi region in the northeast of China. Jingdezhen is known as the ‘Porcelain Capital’ and it is thought that high quality, fine china has been produced there for almost 2000 years. More commonly associated with blue and white coloured wares, pottery has been exported from the area as early as the 13th century and Marco Polo (1254-1324) mentioned the quality of the porcelain in his <em>Travels of Marco Polo</em>. Nothing is known of this particular plate or how Mellor came to have it in his collection but he was no doubt attracted by its vibrant colour palette.

This drawing of Claude Louis Berthollet (1748-1822) used to hang above the fireplace in Joseph Mellor’s library. French chemist Berthollet graduated in medicine from the University of Turin and worked for many years as a doctor in Paris before turning his attention towards chemical science. A contemporary of ‘the Father of Modern Chemistry’ Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (1743-94), Berthollet conducted research into chlorine gas and from his studies was the first to develop ‘liquid bleach’. Mellor researched the reaction between chlorine and hydrogen in his own doctoral studies at Owens College, Manchester.

In January 1905, Mellor was appointed instructor of the Pottery School at Tunstall, which along with Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton make up ‘the Potteries’ in Staffordshire. In 1908 a large shed was erected for the pottery classes on land donated to the ‘industry’ by A.S. Bolton, but as Graham Balfour notes in <em>Clay and Pottery Industries</em> (1914) the wide-angle lens used for taking the photographs ‘greatly exaggerate the spaciousness of the interior.’ It is here in his ‘sanctum’ that Mellor taught his students. In 1905 Mellor also became Director of the Research Laboratories of the Federation, and Honorary Secretary of the Ceramic Society (UK) and editor of its journal.

In 1914 Mellor’s <em>Clay and Pottery Industries</em> appeared. The papers within reveal the full range of his scientific investigations: from the performance of fire bricks and the nature and behaviour of glazes, to thermal expansions of floor tiles and constituents of clays. During WWI his chief work concerned the improvement of refractory linings of steelmaking furnaces, advising the government when ‘supplies of refractory materials and …many necessary steel alloys were cut off.’ For this work he was offered a peerage, which he refused. No doubt some of the class of 1913 depicted here went on to enjoy the facilities of the new Central School of Science and Technology, built the following year (1914). Mellor was made Head of the new Ceramics Department.

Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. He was also a skilled cartoonist and his <em>Uncle Joe’s Nonsense</em> (1934) contains a collection of humorous stories illustrated with clever pen sketches. Just before Mellor died in May 1938, he received a C.B.E. <br /><br /><em>The World of Joseph W. It then deals with his marriage to Emma Cranwell Bakes, his many publications and relationships with his publishers, his contemporaries and friends such as Bernard Moore, Frank Wedgwood, and Louis Solon, and his involvement in various ceramic societies world-wide. And then there is his legacy, which constitutes today annual memorial lectures associated with the Ceramic Society in England and the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, a Mellor Professorship at the University of Otago, and a Mellor street and park in the suburb of Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin. Professor David Buckingham’s research involved mechanistic coordination chemistry with emphasis on the preparation and reactions of cobalt(III) complexes including their use in preparing peptides. Other work included research into fundamental chromium(VI) chemistry, attempts to understand the molecular basis for the use of titanium in transplant bone-marrow surgery, and the preparation of bi-metallic porphyrin models for cytochrome C.

In July 1899, Mellor and his wife, Emma, boarded a ship at Port Chalmers in Dunedin to take up the 1851 Exhibition Science Scholarship at Owens College, Manchester. Under the tutelage of organic chemist, William Perkin Jr, and physical chemist, Harold Dixon, Mellor conducted research into the combination of hydrogen and chlorine, among other things. This letter, signed by Edward Fiddes, Secretary to the Council and Senate and College Tutor, informs Mellor he has been ‘elected Research Fellow’.

Joseph William Mellor married Emma Cranwell Bakes on 25 June 1899 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Mornington, Dunedin. Mellor affectionately referred to her as the “Boss” in his letters and cartoons. Emma Mellor was highly praised by many, including Joseph, for shielding him from interruptions and household worries that would have hindered his scholarly studies.

Mellor could never have done all he did without the help of his devoted wife, Emma. Not only did she run the household but she was instrumental in preparing data for Mellor’s works and sometimes served as Mellor’s secretary. In November 1927, at a Ceramic Society Banquet to celebrate Mellor’s election to the Royal Society, Mellor paid tribute to his wife: ‘She has always taken on her shoulders every care not directly connected with my work.’ This letter from Emma Mellor to Cuthbert John Wilkins (d. 2002), one time Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Canterbury, outlines how Mellor completed his <em>Comprehensive Treatise</em>. The number of volumes, 16, was not planned at the outset. It was continued until it was finished. Emma says of her husband ‘From a dozen, he simply went on and on and on, very tired of it and far from well.’

After the Great Exhibition of 1851 closed, the Royal Commission was established to extend the vision of Prince Albert (as President) by increasing ‘the means of industrial education and extend the influence of science and art upon productive industry’. The 1851 Exhibition Research Awards were part of this legacy, enabling young scientists or engineers of exceptional promise to undertake research work. Both Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) and Mellor won 1851 Exhibition Research Awards: Rutherford in 1895, which allowed him to start postgraduate study at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge; Mellor in 1898, allowing him further study at Owens College, Manchester. Hearing of Mellor’s illness in 1937, Rutherford is not only encouraging, but he also acknowledges Mellor’s ‘splendid work’ in the field of chemistry.

Joseph William Mellor (1869-1938) was an Otago graduate who became a ceramicist, a cartoonist, and, more importantly, a famous chemist. Indeed, his single-handed effort to complete his 16 volume definitive work <em>A Comprehensive Treatise on Inorganic and Theoretical Chemistry</em> (1922-1937), which amounted to over 15,000 pages and 16 million words, has never been equalled. From very humble beginnings and self-initiated study, Mellor obtained a place at the University of Otago, and then won a scholarship to study for a research degree at Owens College, Manchester. He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent, where he became principal of the Technical College (now part of Staffordshire University). During the First World War, Mellor's research was directed towards refractories, high-temperature ceramics relevant to the steel industry and thus the war effort. It was for this work that he was offered a peerage, which he turned down. In 1927 he was elected to the Royal Society for work related to ceramics, the only other being Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Mellor retained a boyish sense of humour all his life, and he was dubbed by colleagues the 'Peter Pan of Ceramics'. He was also a skilled cartoonist and his <em>Uncle Joe’s Nonsense</em> (1934) contains a collection of humorous stories illustrated with clever pen sketches. Just before Mellor died in May 1938, he received a C.B.E. <br /><br /><em>The World of Joseph W. Mellor (1869-1938) Chemist, Ceramicist & Cartoonist</em> is an exhibition that highlights Mellor’s life, work and legacy. It begins with his early years in Kaikorai Valley and first work at Sargood's Boot Factory, and his study at the University of Otago. It then deals with his marriage to Emma Cranwell Bakes, his many publications and relationships with his publishers, his contemporaries and friends such as Bernard Moore, Frank Wedgwood, and Louis Solon, and his involvement in various ceramic societies world-wide. And then there is his legacy, which constitutes today annual memorial lectures associated with the Ceramic Society in England and the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, a Mellor Professorship at the University of Otago, and a Mellor street and park in the suburb of Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin. His personal archives, ceramics and books are found at Special Collections, University of Otago, the Otago Museum, and the Heritage Collection, Dunedin Public Library.

Joseph David Everett (1831-1904) was an English physicist and professor of natural philosophy at Queen’s College, Belfast. Everett invented a shorthand system, a competitor to the well-known Pitman system. This certificate is signed by Everett and certifies that Mr J. W. Mellor, as a member of the Everett Shorthand Society, has sufficient skills in writing and reading shorthand to teach others. Mellor used Everett shorthand in many of his notebooks.

Frances James Blight (1858-1935) was Chairman and Managing Director of the publishing firm Charles Griffin & Co. from 1899 until 1927. Joseph Mellor and Blight corresponded from about 1910 with regard to two of Mellor’s works, published by the firm: <em>A Treatise on Quantitative Inorganic Analysis</em> (1913) and <em>Clay and Pottery Industries</em> (1914). This letter to Mellor confirms the title of a volume, even though there was a slight difference in print. In an earlier letter (1910), Blight highlighted the fact that ‘Booksellers and Librarians like a title easily catalogued and yet suggestive of what the book contains.’

Felix Singer was a ceramics chemist, consultant and Czech-German refugee. He quite possibly accompanied Mellor on one of his many trips with the American Ceramic Society, of which they were both Fellows. Like Mellor, Singer collected a large library of ceramics. After his death in 1957 his daughter, Sonja, published the jointly authored 1,455-page <em>Industrial Ceramics</em> in 1963. This letter indicates that Mellor’s humour and cartoons were well received by members of the ceramics community.

In 1882 the National Liberal Club (NLC) was established on the inspiration of Welsh Liberal MP, Arthur Williams, under the patronage of Liberal politician and four-time Prime Minister William Gladstone (1809-98). The Clubhouse overlooks the Thames on Whitehall Place in London and cost almost £166,000 to build. Despite being described by Michael Meadowcroft, current honorary archivist of the NLC, as ‘more a place for politicians, artists, educationalists and writers, than scientists’, Joseph Mellor became a member in 1921. Mellor was nominated by Rudd Cheslett Rann and Albert Cliff, both of whom claimed that Mellor wasn’t really that keen a politician. Mellor often stayed at the Club or used it for meetings when visiting London.

Abstract

Francis (Frank) Wedgwood (1867-1930) was the great-great grandson of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-95), who is known as the ‘Father of English Potters’. Frank became a partner in the Wedgwood family business in 1889 after the death of his father, Clement. He then became managing director after his uncle Cecil died in 1916. From all accounts, Frank was an unassuming man who was passionate about the success of the Wedgwood dynasty. Mellor and Wedgwood were clearly fast friends as is evidenced in this letter to Mellor in which Frank calls him ‘our one and only Mellor’. Frank died suddenly at Euston train station in October 1930, the year of Josiah Wedgwood’s bicentenary.
