Bought 4 November 1994 from John Barnicoat, Taupo, with 3 diaries and a collection of sketches by J.W. Barnicoat. Two of the diaries were given to Dr T.M. Hocken and returned to J.W. Barnicoat at his request in 1888, after TMH, his wife & a hired penman copied most of the journals & some illustrations. Copies are at M.,1 51 and include a note regarding history.
Bought with the assistance of the University of Otago Heritage Fund and Hocken Library Endowment funds.

This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.

Hocken; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki; label in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: In 1843, the NZ Company brought out many German emigrants from Hamburgh in the St Pauli for Nelson, amongst them was the Rev J.F.H. Wohlers of the North German Missionary Society, who finally settled at Ruapuke in the middle of May 1844 & was greatly aided by the well-known surveyor, Frederick Tuckett. Here he laboured amongst the natives until the time of his death in 1885. Here he was surrounded by the greatest hardships & abject privations, his sole break & holiday was a voyage in an open boat to Nelson in 1849, where he married a widow, Mrs Elise Palmer, by whom he had a daughter, afterwatrds married to Mr Arthur Traill of Stewarts Island. He contributed valuable papers on mythology to the Transactions of the NZ Institute. His interesting life has been written by Mr John Houghton. T.M.H.
