Mr Charles Kettle’s house (Chief Surveyor) 2. N.Z. Co’s Survey Office about Bond St & Water St. 3. Mr W.H. Valpy’s house fronting Manse St & close to the site of the Provincial Hotel, Stafford St. 4. Rev Thos Burns’ manse, near corner of Manse & Princes St. In its proximity are James Brown’s Rob.t Chapman’s & Cap. Cargill’s houses. 5. Duthie’s house about middle of Liverpool St. Mr Kettle’s house is now the site of the Post Office & Gov. Buildings. 6. Emigrants’ barracks built of Manuka, flax, &c about the site of back of Customhouse in Bond St. 7. The First Church with at the back Mr Garrick’s house afterwards the Royal Hotel. In front is the line of High St. Sargood Son & Ewen now occupy the First Church site. T.M. Hocken; on flypage of sketchbook in ink: Thomas Morland Hocken from Sir William Fox. Sir William Fox who well knew the interest I took in old New Zealand & was a frequent visitor at my house, promised to bequeath me these sketches which he commenced to take from the time of his arrival in New Zealand in 1842.
