"Less crowded with articles of furniture than the apartments of ladies of quality in England, the decorations of a bedchamber and boudoir in China are not less costly or complete - a suite of rooms being appropriated to the females of the mandarin's family, to which the husband, children, and female relations and attendants are alone admissible; these are uniformly fashioned, and filled and furnished in a style of beauty and convenience that displays both taste and liberality." Description
An account of the resource
Kircher was ordained a Jesuit in 1628 in Mainz, Germany, but fled his homeland and settled in Rome in 1634 to escape the Thirty Years War. He remained in Rome most of his life researching a wide variety of disciplines, from geography and astronomy to medicine and music. He was a rigorous and sometimes unconventional scientist, yet all his writings retain some of his mystical and religious conceptions of nature. The "China Illustrata" was first published in Latin in 1667, in German in 1668, and in French two years later. The text is based on descriptions by European explorers (many of them Jesuits) in China, India, and other Asian countries. With this book Kircher hoped to demonstrate the origin of Oriental "customs, ceremonies, and idols . . . and to demonstrate the way to bring [back] those who have been turned away from Christ by devilish malice." The splendid engravings were based on explorers' sketches and original images imported from Asia. Not only are they clear visualizations of Kircher's philosophy toward Asian traditions but they are also the first complete illustrations of various aspects of the civilization.

Description
An account of the resource
This detail shows "two of the vessels made use of by the Chinese. The first of these marked (A), is a junk of about a hundred and twenty tons burthen, and was what the Centurion hove down by; these are most in the great rivers, though they sometimes serve for small coasting voyages. The other junk, marked (B), is about two hundred and eighty tons burthen. ... its head, which is represented at (C), is perfectly flat; and when the vessel is deep laden, the second or third plank of this flat surface is oft-times under water. The masts, sails and rigging of these vessels are ruder than the built; for their masts are made of trees, no otherwise fashioned than by barking them, and lopping off their branches. Each mast has only two shrouds of twisted rattan; which are often both shifted to the weather-side; and the halyard, when the yard is up, serves instead of a third shroud. The sails are of matt, strengthened every three feet by an horizontal rib of bamboo; they run upon the mast with hoops, as is represented in the figure, and when they are lowered down, they fold upon the deck" (Anson, 1776, 414-415).

Description
An account of the resource
"The Chinese fishermen take out with them in the morning ten or twelve of these birds, still fasting, either in light boats, or on bamboo rafts. They make them dive one or two at a time: the cormorant seldom comes up without having taken a fish, and which is often of a very considerable size. To prevent the cormorant swallowing his prey entire, and depriving his master of his profit, he generally has a ring round his neck, which stops any thing from going further down; but the animal is frequently so well trained, that this precaution is unnecessary. The bird faithfully takes his prize to his owner, who when he has done sufficient for him, lets the cormorant work for himself. " (Breton, 1813, v. IV, p. 46).

Description
An account of the resource
The cover of the 1945 edition of the Medical School magazine, Digest. The image juxtaposes a soldier with a gun and a surgeon with a scalpel, both held at the same angle. Medical students were exempt from conscription during World War II. Due to a shortage in trained medical personnel, the government recommended that the students complete their degrees. Although some still chose to enlist, the cover design suggests that those continuing with their studies were not shirking their duty. Medical training was seen as an essential part of the war effort.

"About this period a mutual friendship began to exist between us; confidence took place of timidity; and now, instead of permitting only a few to visit the shore at a time, they fitted up the garden of a temple as a sort of general arsenal for us; the habitations of the priests were allotted as an hospital for the side, whilst other temporary buildings of bamboo were erected for the reception of our powder, which required airing, and for the various stores wanting inspection and repair." His landscapes reflect his environmental concerns, but also a recognition of the raw essence of a young country, and an ability to portray New Zealand in a unique and iconic way. Religious and moral issues are explored throughout McCahon’s work, as evidenced by his use of Christian imagery. Another of McCahon's interests was poetry, and he became the first New Zealand artist to incorporate words and numbers in his work.

Description
An account of the resource
Abraham Ortelius (1527-98), rightly called the 'Father of Modern Cartography', developed the idea of assembling a compendium of maps to form an atlas. The first edition of his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" was published in 1570 and it was a great success. This facsimile edition depicts China and Japan, albeit with a rather bulbous island of Honshu, and a much diminished and broken version of Hokkaido, Shikoku and Kyushu. Ortelius prided himself on using the best possible sources for the maps and the textual descriptions; later sixteenth century editions depicted the Great Wall of China.

"In Mr Heine's notes we find the following in reference to this bird: 'I found this species in various places around Macao. Like nearly all the other birds, it had retired to the rocky hills, where it hopped gaily from bough to bough, or flitted from rock to rock, sometimes solitary, but frequently in pairs. Its movements were short, and sometimes eccentric. When anything unusual attracted its attention, it raised its crest, and looked at the object with an expression of intense curiosity.' The figure in our plate is of the size of life, and represents the adult male" (Perry, 1856, v.II, 241).

Description
An account of the resource
This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.
