Various Accounts are given us by Anatomists of the Muscles of the Anus. Galen divides its Sphincter into two, viz. Carnosus and Cutaneus; which with the two Levatores, make four Muscles belonging to this Part. Riolan multiplies them to the Number of nine, three Sphincters, Carnosus, Cutaneus, and Vaginalis; and six Elevators, two internal, and four external, of which one Pair belongs to the Os Coccygis. But this Opinion seems rather grounded on Fancy, or some particular Subject, than the general Appearance of them in Dissection" (Cowper, 1724, Chap. V.)

In the Contemplation of Nature we meet with nothing that affords us a more invincible Argument of the Wisdom of the Divine Architect, than the Structure and Composition of Animal Bodies; nor is this Infinite Understanding less manifested in the Instruments of Voluntary Motion, than in any other Parts whatever of the Animal Body.
No wonder therefore, that Anatomical Disquisitions should be exceedingly entertaining ..." (Cowper, 1724, Preface).
"Of the Muscles of the Back and Loins.
It would be very tedious and of little Use to insert all the different Accounts Anatomists have given us of these Muscles; and the variety we have found in several Subjects, inclines us to think, that scarcely three in ten are exactly alike in this respect ... However, we shall endeavour to give as distinct an Account of them as possible; and in order thereunto, we shall consider them as Common to the Back and Loins, or Proper to either of them" (Cowper, 1724, Chap. XXIV).

Like nearly all the other birds, it had retired to the rocky hills, where it hopped gaily from bough to bough, or flitted from rock to rock, sometimes solitary, but frequently in pairs. Its movements were short, and sometimes eccentric. When anything unusual attracted its attention, it raised its crest, and looked at the object with an expression of intense curiosity.' The figure in our plate is of the size of life, and represents the adult male" (Perry, 1856, v.II, 241).

Description
An account of the resource
From the middle of the seventeenth to the beginning of the nineteenth-century, Japan, through the Tokugawa Shōgunate, was successful in rigorously enforcing a policy of seclusion. No Europeans were allowed into Japan except the Dutch who were allowed to land a ship every yEar In July 1853 Commodore Matthew Perry, with a squadron of four ships-of-war entered Uraga Bay, just south of Yokohama. He returned the next year and a treaty was signed to allow the opening of Shimoda (south of Numazu and Mishima) and Hakodate (on Hokkaido) to ships seeking provisions. This contact represented the 'opening' of Japan (Dai Nippon) to the modern world.

Description
An account of the resource
This detail shows "two of the vessels made use of by the Chinese. The first of these marked (A), is a junk of about a hundred and twenty tons burthen, and was what the Centurion hove down by; these are most in the great rivers, though they sometimes serve for small coasting voyages. The other junk, marked (B), is about two hundred and eighty tons burthen. ... its head, which is represented at (C), is perfectly flat; and when the vessel is deep laden, the second or third plank of this flat surface is oft-times under water. The masts, sails and rigging of these vessels are ruder than the built; for their masts are made of trees, no otherwise fashioned than by barking them, and lopping off their branches. Each mast has only two shrouds of twisted rattan; which are often both shifted to the weather-side; and the halyard, when the yard is up, serves instead of a third shroud. The sails are of matt, strengthened every three feet by an horizontal rib of bamboo; they run upon the mast with hoops, as is represented in the figure, and when they are lowered down, they fold upon the deck" (Anson, 1776, 414-415).

Between 1630 and 1830 Japan's borders were virtually closed to western visitors. The only Europeans allowed into Japan were the Dutch. Atlas Japannensis: being remarkable addresses by way of embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to the Emperor of Japan (1670) was based on the writings of Arnoldus Montanus (1625-83), a Dutch missionary. The map publisher John Ogilby "English'd, and Adorn'd" this large folio book, the earliest major work written on Japan. It contains over sixty black and white engravings and is packed with detail, including such subjects as murder in Japan, Japanese baths, Japanese tortures, wines and Whaling The engraving depicts the city of Yedo or Edo (now Tokyo). Dr Thomas Hocken visited Japan; his visit is noted on the title-page 'T.M. Hocken, Yokohama, March 1904.'

"The Society of Jesus was founded in 1539 by St Ignatius of Loyola. From their base at Goa, India, the Jesuits ventured forth to Japan and China: their goal to spread Christianity and promote the work of the Society. Over the years, their written accounts of Chinese life and customs grew. Athansius Kircher (1601-1680), a Jesuit mathematician, produced the wonderfully illustrated China Monumentis (1671). His work reached a wide audience, and promoted much that was new about China and her people. Kircher was also one of the first Europeans to alert the West to Egyptian hieroglyphics. Here he contrasts them with Chinese characters.

An account of the resource
Chirimen books are thought to have been invented in August 1885, when a Japanese fairy tale series was published by Hasegawa Takejiro (1853-1936). The books were illustrated by Sensei Eitaku. Thirty-one popular Japanese folktales were translated into English. Under special contract with Griffith, Farran & Co., the first 16 books of the fairy tale series were printed by Kobunsha with the Griffith, Farran & Company imprint. The special printings for Griffith, Farran & Company were published ca 1888. Pictured is the cover for no. 9. 'The Serpent with Eight Heads' showing the top half of the huge Eight-Headed Serpent - the other half spans the back cover of the book.

So wrote Lemuel Gulliver of his visit to Japan in Swift's "Gulliver's Travels". In reality, many foreigners spent years in Japan, never once obtaining an audience with the Emperor. Description
An account of the resource
Kircher was ordained a Jesuit in 1628 in Mainz, Germany, but fled his homeland and settled in Rome in 1634 to escape the Thirty Years War. He remained in Rome most of his life researching a wide variety of disciplines, from geography and astronomy to medicine and music. He was a rigorous and sometimes unconventional scientist, yet all his writings retain some of his mystical and religious conceptions of nature. The "China Illustrata" was first published in Latin in 1667, in German in 1668, and in French two years later. The text is based on descriptions by European explorers (many of them Jesuits) in China, India, and other Asian countries. With this book Kircher hoped to demonstrate the origin of Oriental "customs, ceremonies, and idols . . . and to demonstrate the way to bring [back] those who have been turned away from Christ by devilish malice." The splendid engravings were based on explorers' sketches and original images imported from Asia. Not only are they clear visualizations of Kircher's philosophy toward Asian traditions but they are also the first complete illustrations of various aspects of the civilization.

An account of the resource
Abraham Ortelius (1527-98), rightly called the 'Father of Modern Cartography', developed the idea of assembling a compendium of maps to form an atlas. The first edition of his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" was published in 1570 and it was a great success. This facsimile edition depicts China and Japan, albeit with a rather bulbous island of Honshu, and a much diminished and broken version of Hokkaido, Shikoku and Kyushu. Ortelius prided himself on using the best possible sources for the maps and the textual descriptions; later sixteenth century editions depicted the Great Wall of China.

Description
An account of the resource
Lawless proceedings in the Canton river, the city of Peking, joss-houses, the Roman Catholic mission, military promenades at Shanghai, the Yangtze, Chinese prostitutes, first views of Deshima and Nagasaki (Japan), the persecution of Christians, Japanese women, art wares, opium and tea producing districts. All of this and more is covered in Laurence Oliphant's account of the special mission to China and Japan as Private Secretary to the Earl of Elgin during the years 1857 to 1859. The main purpose of the mission was the signing of treaties opening up both countries to British trade. The Treaty of Tientsin (China) was signed on 26 June 1858, which opened new ports to trading, permitted foreign legations in Peking (Beijing), allowed Christian missionary activity, and legalised the import of opium. The United States and Russia gained similar privileges in separate Treaties
