Hurunui, a ship built in 1875 by Palmers and Co. for the New Zealand Shipping Company. Under Captain Barclay, it was a 114 day journey for the family, consisting of father Job Mellor, mother Emma, and sisters Ada, Agnes, and Gertrude. Joseph, who was ten, was born in Lindley, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, on 9 July 1869. Another sister, Nellie, was born on the voyage out and given Hurunui as her middle name.
