Description
An account of the resource
"About this period a mutual friendship began to exist between us; confidence took place of timidity; and now, instead of permitting only a few to visit the shore at a time, they fitted up the garden of a temple as a sort of general arsenal for us; the habitations of the priests were allotted as an hospital for the side, whilst other temporary buildings of bamboo were erected for the reception of our powder, which required airing, and for the various stores wanting inspection and repair." Description
An account of the resource
This showcase offers a representational sample of the pictures that Dr T. M. Hocken gave in trust for the people of New Zealand. At the time of his death in 1910 he had amassed 437 pictorial items, a collection of more than 4,000 printed volumes, as well as photographs, manuscripts and maps. Collectively these items are the Hocken Library’s founding gift and Dr Hocken’s abiding interest in the history of Southern New Zealand continues to shape what the Hocken collects today and preserves for the future benefit of researchers.

Description
An account of the resource
Margin below image in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Lyttelton and Port Victoria March 1851; on mount in ink: The originals of these sketches, eleven in number, were taken by Mr William Holmes, who arrived at Lyttelton in the Castle Eden, in February 185He accompanied the Rev Dr Thomas Jackson, Bishop designate of Lyttelton & was appointed Assistant Master of the newly instituted First Lyttelton Grammar School. The sketches were lent to me in 1903 by the Rev. Prebendary Jackson of S. Paul’s Cathedral London & Son of the Bishop Designate. With the exception of Nos 5,6,9,10 & 11, which were not worth copying, I had them lithographed by one of the staff of the British Museum. To make them more legible & useful, I have slightly coloured them. Mr Holmes suggested that “My sketches be published in large 8vo with a little descriptive letterpress to be called Canterbury sketches and sold in a wrapper at a small amount, say 2/- or 2/6 or such a price that the poorest emigrant might afford. This will then afford great benefit both to the Association & the colonist. N.B. To be got up in plain outline.” The Association, however, got into so much pecuniary difficulty that it was doubtless impossible to comply with Mr Holmes’s request. T.M.H.; note by W. Holmes transcribed in ink by Dr Hocken: No I. Rhodes’s farm, Banks Peninsula. A native Pah. Pulao Bay. Castle Eden, 930 tons. Sumner Road. Town of Lyttelton. Port Victoria. Quail Island (abounding in good building stone) Mountain Path to Christchurch & the Plains. Bridle Path. Distant glimpse of 90 mile beach. Pacific Ocean. Wm Holmes. T.M.H.

Description
An account of the resource
Margin below image in ink: T.M. Hocken; verso in ink: Capt. King’s; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki; label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Early in the last century Kororareka was resorted to by the South Sea Whalers to refresh & refit their vessels. Gradually it became populated with a motley throng of runaway sailors, beach combers & escaped convicts & became the scene of the wildest orgies. In 1830 Ben Turner opened the first store & grogshop & thenceforward it was a busy place, numbering in 1830 a thousand souls with grogshops, billiard saloons, skittle alleys, hells, a theatre & a church. To keep some sort of safety an association was formed which dispensed a rough justice in which tarring & feathering were features. Here the first war commenced when Heke cut down the obnoxious flagstaff which was supposed to interfere with the trade of the port. Paihia, the chief missionary station, was on the opposite side of the bay, three miles distant. T.M.H.
