Verso in pencil: Ohinemutu pa on Lake Rotorua; on mount in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: View from Orakau Maunga-Tautiri, with natives digging in the foreground. Ohinemutu pa on Lake Rotorua. T.M. Hocken. The morere or swing. A favourite game. Given to me by Dr Shortland & probably drawn by him. Dr Edward Shortland, M.D. F.R.C.P. was an eminent person in early N.Z. days. He was brother of Lieut. Willoughby Shortland, Governor Hobson’s Colonial Secretary, & a member of the well known naval family of the name. He was born at Lipson house, near Plymouth, March 20th 1812 & died at Colguill, Plymouth, July 2nd 1893. He took his degree at Cambridge & came to N.Z. in 1840 acting as Private Secretary to Governor Hobson. A good linguist, of great literary ability & fond of travel he soon identified himself with native affairs & was for a time Protector of Aborigines. In 1842 he started the Kareri Maori newspaper for the benefit of the natives. He was much associated with Bishop Selwyn & Chief Justice Martin. Of great value & interest he wrote The Southern Districts, New Zealand, The traditions & superstitions of New Zealanders, How to learn Maori, & some papers in Maori. On mount in ink: T.M. Hocken; on label in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: Hone Heke & Kawiti were the chief leaders in the rebellion of war in the north, 1844-46. Heke belonged to the Ngapuhi Tribe & was a nephew of the celebrated Hongi Hika whose warlike spirit he emulated. He lived for some years at the Paihia mission station doing duty occasionally as a lay reader. He married his cousin Hariata, the beautiful daughter of Hongi. Died Aug 6 1850 & buried close to Pakaraka. Kawiti, a fine specimen of the old savage warrior had command of the Ruapekapeka pa in the war & was a Kawakawa chief. He died in 1854, at 78, at his settlement of Otaikumikumi. He had been baptised by Archdeacon Williams in presence of his old comrades & was dressed in a full suit of black! T.M.H.

Description
An account of the resource
On mount in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: Native Feast held at Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand. May 11th 1844. Joseph Merrett, artist. T.M. Hocken; label in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: An interesting account of this Feast is given in Gov. Fitzroyís despatch to Lord Stanley, dated May the 25th 1844 & printed in P.P. No 247, April 22nd, 1845 p. 8-18. It is copied in part into The NEw Zealander of Nov 8th 1845 V. also the Southern Cross of May 18th 1845. The artist of this primitive watercolour was Joseph Merrett, a former resident of N.S.W. & an interpreter. It was lithographed at home with some alterations which are an improvement on the original. Judging from its rarity, this lithograph, q.v. must have had a scanty sale. Several other of his sketches are in my collection. Latterly he lived near Gisborne & died at Wellington in 1854. T.M. Hocken.; label in ink in Dr Hockenís hand: N.B. The site of the Feast being quite forgotten & frequent inquiry failing to locate it, I devoted some time in March 1908, aided by Mr Allom of Auckland to its discovery. The hill in the foreground of the picture in the foot of Little Rangitoto mow reserved for quarry purposes. Mountain Road runs through it thus forming an additional landmark. This gives a sufficient key to the position. In early days this piece of ground had several small lagoons which have entirely disappeared.
