Lower right (l.r.) in ink: J.J. 1840; margin below image l. - r. in ink in Dr Hocken's hand: The British flag first hoisted on the shore of the Waitemata, September 18th, 1840. T.M. Hocken; margin above image in ink: No I; label in ink in Dr Hocken's hand: The Township of Russell proved utterly unsuited for the Government so Cap Hobson entrusted his friend Captain William Cornwallis Symonds of the Scotch Company at Manukau to select a suitable site. The latter recommended the Waitemata. The spot chosen was purchased from the Chief Te Kawau of Orakei & named Auckland after the British Prime Minister. A staff came down from Russell in the Anna Watson to take possession & on the 18th of September 1840 the flagstaff was hoisted by Cap Symonds on what was afterwards called Britomart Point & saluted with 24 guns from the Anna Watson & 15 from the Platina, Cap Hobson being then saluted with 7 guns. Those also present round the flagstaff were Felton Mathew, the Surveyor General, Dr John Johnson, William Mason, Superintendent of Work, Charles Logie, formerly of India & the Customs at Sydney (later at Dunedin), McCarthy also of the Customs (later at Port Chalmers) & Mr Edward Williams, son of Rev. Henry Williams. The lady in the fashionable bonnet is Mrs Mathew. Governor Hobson came down from Russell to Auckland in January 1841. Mr Mason gave me this information. T.M.H.

Skinner, Esq, New Plymouth. Mount Eliot - Puke-ariki Pa is now excavated out of existence. The precise spot of this scene is about 50 yards SE from the New Plymouth Railway Platform between St Aubyn & Chilman Streets and facing the sea. T.M. Hocken; label: Na Te Hakena Tenei Tiki; note: Mr William Spain was appointed by Lord John Russell to examine the land claims of the New Zealand Company in the Colony. He decided that they were entitled to a Crown Grant for 60,000 acres in Taranaki, a purchase made by them in 1840 from the Waikato Tribe & with Governor Hobson’s consent. The original; owners, however, the Ngatiawa, objected to Mr Spain’s award, & Governor Fitzroy, fearing strife & bloodshed, refused to ratify it to the intense disappointment & disgust of the settlers. Many of them attributed to this vacillation and cowardice, as they chose to call it, the later outbreak in 1859 of the Taranaki War. In this historic picture, Mr T. Forsaith is interpreting the award whilst Messrs Spain, J.T. Wicksteed, the company’s agent, & Colonel Wakefield are under the verandah. The house was the courthouse, the residence of Cap H. King, R.N. the Magistrate, & for long used as the church. T.M.H.

Probably of John Wesley’s mother, Mrs Susanna Wesley; margin below image in ink in Dr Hocken’s hand: This historical picture was painted in 1863 by James Smetham, Esq. R.A. of London, a well known artist & a friend of Ruskin & Rosetti. It represents a group of Maori chiefs & their wives, the inetrpreter, the Rev. Dr & Mrs Jobson, & Mrs Brames Hall assembled in a room in Wesley’s house, London, & was intended to commemorate the Wesleyan Missionary Jubilee. The Maoris, in charge of the interpreter, visited England to gain an idea of its greatness & resource; the expedition was undertaken with the sanction of the New Zealand Government. The received the most hospitable reception from the Queen & from the highest persons in the Kingdom. The Queen was godmother of a Maori boy born during the visit- November 1863- The picture indicates the meeting of the civilised Maori with the Missionary, to whose labours his advancement is due. It was intended that it should hang in the Mission Hall & Mr Swales, a publisher in Darlington, undertook to publish a jubilee print from it. But the scheme fell through. [Text obscured] … The picture, for which Mr Smetham received one hundred & fifty guineas was sent to New Zealand for sale, the price asked being 200 guineas. After a curious history it finally came into my possession. The portraits, Mrs Smetham informs me, are all careful likenesses. T.M. Hocken, Dunedin 1889.
