Description
An account of the resource
From the middle of the seventeenth to the beginning of the nineteenth-century, Japan, through the Tokugawa Shōgunate, was successful in rigorously enforcing a policy of seclusion. No Europeans were allowed into Japan except the Dutch who were allowed to land a ship every yEar In July 1853 Commodore Matthew Perry, with a squadron of four ships-of-war entered Uraga Bay, just south of Yokohama. He returned the next year and a treaty was signed to allow the opening of Shimoda (south of Numazu and Mishima) and Hakodate (on Hokkaido) to ships seeking provisions. This contact represented the 'opening' of Japan (Dai Nippon) to the modern world.

The Magistrates of the Town hearing of my Letter, received me as a Publick Minister, they provided me with Carriages and Servants, and bore my Charges to Yedo [Tokyo], where I was admitted to an Audience, and delivered my Letter, which was opened with great Ceremony, and explained to the Emperor...'. So wrote Lemuel Gulliver of his visit to Japan in Swift's "Gulliver's Travels". In reality, many foreigners spent years in Japan, never once obtaining an audience with the Emperor. The map of Laputa and Luggnag also contains a map of Japan.

An account of the resource
Abraham Ortelius (1527-98), rightly called the 'Father of Modern Cartography', developed the idea of assembling a compendium of maps to form an atlas. The first edition of his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" was published in 1570 and it was a great success. This facsimile edition depicts China and Japan, albeit with a rather bulbous island of Honshu, and a much diminished and broken version of Hokkaido, Shikoku and Kyushu. Ortelius prided himself on using the best possible sources for the maps and the textual descriptions; later sixteenth century editions depicted the Great Wall of China.

An account of the resource
Patrick Lafcadio Hearn reinvented himself. He was known as Patrick in his native Ireland, Lafcadio in America, and Yakumo Koizumi in Japan. He wrote 11 substantial books about his adopted country. On arrival he was given useful advice: 'Do not fail to write down your first impressions as soon as possible. They are evanescent, you know; they will never come to you again...'. Here in the first UK edition of Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan is his description of his first day in Japan.

Description
An account of the resource
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) is almost as Japanese as haiku. Both are an art form, an institution in Japan. Haiku is indigenous to the nation; Hearn became a Japanese citizen and married a Japanese [Setsu Koizumi], taking the name Yakumo Koizumi. His flight from Western materialism brought him to Japan in 1890. His search for beauty and tranquillity, for pleasing customs and lasting values, kept him there the rest of his life, a confirmed Japanophile. He became the great interpreter of things Japanese to the West. His keen intellect, poetic imagination and wonderful clear style permitted him to penetrate to the very essence of things Japanese - from Tuttle's 'publisher's foreword' to Hearn editions. Hearn arrived in Japan in 1890 and through his friendship with Basil Hall Chamberlain, he was able to secure various teaching positions, including a post at the Tokyo Imperial University. This reprint edition contains his many lectures on Japan and Japanese life.

An account of the resource
In 1867, the last shōgun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, resigned and the Emperor, Mutsuhito, regained the position of actual head of government. Mutsuhito took the name Meiji ('enlightened government') to designate his reign and this became his imperial title. The royal capital was transferred to Edo, renamed Tokyo ('eastern capital'). This late nineteenth century concertina format publication documents the history of the Tokugawa shōgun. In what is a typical Japanese publication, both sides of the paper have text and images.

Chirimen books are thought to have been invented in August 1885, when a Japanese fairy tale series was published by Hasegawa Takejiro (1853-1936). The books were illustrated by Sensei Eitaku. Thirty-one popular Japanese folktales were translated into English. Under special contract with Griffith, Farran & Co., the first 16 books of the fairy tale series were printed by Kobunsha with the Griffith, Farran & Company imprint. The special printings for Griffith, Farran & Company were published ca 1888. Pictured is the cover for: no. 1. 'Momotaro' showing Momotaro and his three followers - a dog, a monkey and a pheasant - breaking through the front gate of the Island of the Devils.
