Description

Label by Dr B.H. Howard: Matukituki. Not the valley of the present Matakitaki River but the open country at Murchison below the junction of Buller & Matakitaki. Also called “Aglionby Valley” [B.H. Howard, 64: Fox in area 18-19 Feb 1846].
Lower left (l.l.) in ink: In the Martukituki or Aglionby Valley; verso u.r.: 16; on sketchbook mount: On the Buller River. Matukituki (Hope) 1847 with T. Brunner & Heaphy; on flypage of sketchbook in ink: Thomas Morland Hocken from Sir William Fox. Sir William Fox who well knew the interest I took in old New Zealand & was a frequent visitor at my house, promised to bequeath me these sketches which he commenced to take from the time of his arrival in New Zealand in 1842.
