Abstract

Augusta Edith Hewett’s circular bookplate with an owl centre-stage is a delightful one. Unfortunately, there is often very little information on bookplate owners, and what they did, or where they lived. An ‘A. Edith Hewett’ is recorded in the 1881 Census as visiting 13 Church Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. She is aged 25, born 1856. Is this our Augusta? She is listed as having ‘private income’, which hints at enough to have a bookplate created. One can only guess at the size of her library.
