Abstract

Frances Mary Hodgkins was born on 28 April 1869, and lived in Dunedin until she left for England in 1901 to pursue her artistic ambitions. She was the first New Zealand artist to have work displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Her legacy continues today through the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, established by the University of Otago in 1962, to aid and encourage painters, sculptors and multi-media artists. This photograph was taken by her father, William Hodgkins, when she was about 21 or 22.
